Neta's story

"It's easy to forget yourself when you're busy taking care of everyone else."

Neta, a mother of 5, was having trouble managing her health conditions. "And at just 33 years old, I ended up suffering from a stroke."

AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia intervened and put Neta on the path to recovery and proper management of her conditions.

"I lost 35 pounds and brought my A1C levels down enough to no longer need medication. Now, I am more self-aware, and I incorporate stress management into my daily lifestyle. My health plan helped connect me to a therapist so I have someone to talk to, and that helps keep everything balanced in my life. My doctors are so pleased. And so am I!"

After having her health plan help turn her life around, Neta was interested in joining the AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia team.

She wanted to make a difference in people's lives as the health plan had in hers.

"I put in an application, but they didn't have a position open for me at the time," she said. "A year later, they reached back out to me and said, 'We haven't forgotten about you.' I couldn't believe it. I went in for an interview and now here I am."

For Neta, working with the care team confirmed her passion for serving others.

But one of the biggest selling points for wanting to work with AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia was knowing that they practice what they preach.

"Hiring within the community says a lot," she said. "In order to know who you're serving, you need to go into the trenches. We lived their lives, we know the language, and we're not afraid. People in the community want a familiar place because that familiar place becomes empowerment."
